We all have a weakness in something. Mine? Food and desserts. Food is a huge part of my life and not because I need to eat, but because I enjoy it as well. Now, I don’t call myself a foodie, but I do absolutely love (and I mean LOVE) to eat. I don’t even want to admit this but I spent countless hours on YELP, browsing for restaurants near my house, friend’s places, and any random place I think I might end up for you know, just in case. I spend some of my Friday nights, in my bed, scrolling through pictures of food (can’t forget desserts!) and imagining my next meal. If I’m not obsessed, I don’t know what else to tell you.

Anyway, food is a big part of not only mine, but all our lives. There’s food with family, friends, dates, and interviews. Some events even surround food! In any situation before we all stuff our faces, here are few guidelines so we won’t be known as “the slob” or “the fatty”:

Before eating:

  • Put your napkin over your lap in case any food drops (happens to me more often than it should). If you need to leave the meal, put your napkin on your chair, not on the table
  • Wait until everyone receives their food to start eating, but you may sip your water/ drink
  • Order simple foods that are eaten with a fork or knife- nothing like a huge greasy pizza, sauces, or anything that can squeeze out

During the meal:

  • Sit up straight and keep your feet flat or crossed at your ankles (I know it’s harder for short girls like me!)
  • Use your silverware from the outside in (yeah, that’s the trick)
  • Don’t eat with your hands (unless it’s meant to). That’s what utensils are for!
  • Take small bites because you know you’ll be doing quite a bit of talking but definitely don’t talk with you mouth full!
  • Try to keep up with the pace of eating. I admit, one time, I took 2 hours to eat a plate of sushi on a date. I know, I have skills
  • If you are sharing a dish with other people, portion control!! I eat really slow and hate feeling hungry because other people got to it faster. It’s really not a survival of the fittest type situation…
  • You don’t have to eat everything on the plate, but please don’t eat like a freaking bird either. We don’t need to know that you’re on a diet

Finishing the meal:

  • Don’t all jump for the check at once! But please, offer to pay
  • If you have to excuse yourself, give the other person a warning, but don’t go chatting on your phone or take up anyone’s time when you can easily do it after the interview/date

Save yourself from some embarrassment:

  • If you drop something on the floor, don’t pick it up. Try to catch the server’s eye and let them know (discreetly). Especially if you need new utensils
  • Remove lodge items with your tongue. If that doesn’t work, excuse yourself to the bathroom. Make sure you don’t have anything else stuck in your teeth while you’re at it

Thoughts on what else can go wrong while eating??
